Why a desktop app
The three things a browser tab cannot do.
Online compressors are convenient until you have a folder of four hundred RAW exports, a client NDA, or a slow connection. Those are the cases this was built for.
Photos never leave the machine
Everything is processed locally. Pull the network cable and it keeps working. Nothing is queued, cached, or sent to a server you have to trust.
Whole folders in one pass
Drop in a folder and every image inside is compressed, renamed, and converted with the same settings. Subfolders are kept or flattened, your choice.
No size cap, no queue
No 5 MB upload limit and no waiting behind other people. A 60-megapixel file is handled at the speed of your own disk.
How to compress an image
Four steps, about ninety seconds.
The order matters here, so it is numbered. Each step assumes you have done the one before it.
Install and open
Run the installer, or extract the portable ZIP if you cannot install software. There is no sign-up screen — the app opens straight into the workspace.
Add your images
Drag a file, a selection, or an entire folder onto the window. The list shows each image with its current dimensions and file size so you can see what you started with.
Pick a quality level
Choose Lossless, High, Balanced or Smallest, or set a target file size and let SqueezeImages find the quality that hits it. The split preview shows you exactly what each level costs before you commit.
Export
Pick an output folder and format, then export. Originals are never overwritten unless you explicitly ask for it, and the summary tells you how much space you saved.

Which format should you export to?
Choosing the right format usually saves more weight than any amount of quality tuning. Every figure below is the same 4032 × 3024 photograph, written out four times.

Export to WebP, unless something stops you.
It is a third lighter than JPEG at the same visual quality, it keeps transparency, and every browser released in the last five years reads it. Reach for PNG only when you need pin-sharp text or a transparent background, and for AVIF only when you know what will be opening the file.

Is SqueezeImages really free?
Yes. Every feature on this page works in the free version, with no watermark, no export limit, and no trial period. The app is supported by advertising on this website, not by charging for the software.
Do my photos get uploaded anywhere?
No. SqueezeImages processes images on your own machine and never sends them to a server. You can disconnect from the internet entirely and it will keep working. That is the main reason to use a desktop compressor instead of a web one.
How many images can I compress at once?
There is no fixed cap. Batch size is limited only by your available memory and disk space. A folder of 500 photos from a modern phone camera typically finishes in under a minute on a mid-range laptop.
Which formats can SqueezeImages read and write?
It reads JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, TIFF, BMP and GIF, and writes JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF. HEIC photos from an iPhone can be converted to JPEG or WebP in the same pass as the compression.
Does compression visibly hurt the picture?
At Balanced and above, almost never. Most photographs shed 80 to 90 percent of their weight before any difference shows at normal viewing size. The split preview lets you judge that yourself before committing, and Lossless mode re-encodes with no quality change at all.
Does it remove EXIF and location data?
It can. Metadata stripping is a checkbox in the export panel and it is on by default, which removes GPS coordinates, camera serial numbers and timestamps. Turn it off if you need to keep copyright fields.
Can I run it without installing anything?
Yes. The portable build is a ZIP you can extract to a USB stick and run directly. It writes no registry keys and stores settings beside the executable, so it works on managed machines where you cannot install software.
What are the system requirements?
Windows 10 or newer, macOS 11 Big Sur or newer, or a 64-bit Linux distribution with glibc 2.28 or newer. It needs about 200 MB of disk space and runs comfortably in 4 GB of RAM.
